It’s International Happy Hour!

March 13, 2015

Wouldn’t it be great to go on a cocktail tasting world trip? Every country, region or city has it’s very own liqueurs and drink. Let’s start our cocktail tasting tour in good old Europe. Our first European stop is Spain. We will order a delicious Sangria on the Ramblas in Barcelona. Sangria is made with wine, chopped fruits, a splash of brandy and some kind of sweetener. Sangria is simply the best drink for a long Mediterranean night. We’ll continue our journey in Italy. Italy  is world-renowned for its fabulous cuisine and excellent wines. When strolling through the streets of Rome, we should find a cozy restaurant, order a Bellini and just enjoy life. Bellini pleases every gourmet with its soft taste of Prosecco and peach purée – it’s pure indulgence!

Continuing the tour in Asia, Sake made from fermented rice is the drink of choice in Japan. The beverage is also known as rice wine in English speaking countries. As Japan is known for its rich culture and centuries-old traditions, also Sake is served with a special ceremony. Sake is gently warmed in a bottle (tokkuri) and eventually sipped from a small porcelain cup (sakazuki). We’re traveling further to Singapore and it’s getting fancier with the Singapore Sling, a fruity, sweet, classically tropical cocktail mainly made with Gin, Cointreau, pineapple and lime juice – the perfect cocktail for a luxurious night at the infinity pool of Marina Bay Sands.

Traveling from Singapore to New York, we’ll be served the classical Manhattan. The cocktail was first served at a banquet in 1790 and is made with Vermouth, Whiskey, and bitters. To keep it classy, the Manhattan cocktail is decorated with a cherry and lemon slice. Yet, the oldest American cocktail is Sazerac from New Orleans. Cognac or rye Whisky, Absinthe or Herbsaint, sugar and Peychaud’s Bitters make the Sazerac a fairly stiff cocktail.

Eventually, we’ll  finish our cocktail tasting journey in South America – a continent that boasts cheerful atmosphere, rhythmic dances, colorful parties and, of course, the proper drinks. Peru’s undisputed national drink is Pisco Sour, a mixture of Pisco (a regional brandy), lemon juice, bitters and eggs. A real Peruvian party is definitely unimaginable without Pisco Sour! Traveling from the western part of South America to the east coast, we’ll arrive in Brazil – the country of Samba, carnival, Copacabana and, yes, Caipirinha! Caipirinha – the iconic cocktail made of Cachaça, crushed ice, lime wedges and sugar. This cocktail undoubtedly boasts the perfect balance of sweetness and refreshment.
